Fire Alarms “Particularly Important” for Rural Home Insurance Customers
It is crucial for home emergency cover customers who live in rural areas to have fire alarms installed in their homes, it has been asserted.Craig Drinkald, manager at Carlisle Fire Station, made his comments to the Cumberland News after a family escaped from a blaze at a house in Cumrew, near Carlisle. He noted they were woken by a smoke alarm and managed to get out of the property alive.Mr Drinkald told the publication he could not emphasise enough how important it was for people to have a smoke alarm fitted in their home.”Rural areas are particularly important as it can take a while for fire crews to get there. If you’ve got a smoke alarm then at least you get a warning and you can get out alive,” the manager said. The government’s Fire Kills campaign recommends people test the batteries in their fire alarms on a weekly basis and never remove them.It is vitally important for people to have an escape route from their home planned in case of fire, it has been asserted.Ian Williams, a spokesperson for the fire service, made his comments after a family escaped from a flat which was ablaze. The fire is thought to have started at around 01:00 GMT at the Star Kebab and Burger House in Bangor. He said: “This is yet another incident which demonstrates how crucial it is to have a working smoke alarm and a planned escape route from your property.”
