Travel Breaks for the Environmentally Conscious Snowboarder

Hundreds of keen skiers will before long be searching for their ski trousers and dashing off in search of the heaviest snowfall.

And undoubtedly the impact from your carbon footprint will be close to as far down the list of vacation essentials as a Christmas cracker after the Christmas holidays.

Just last year, a sluggish snow hit the headlines and holidaymakers were panicky about the bits of snow melting almost as soon as they put down.

Ski business Chalet1802, based at the foot of Mont Blanc in Chamonix France in the French Alps, is one of the first independent firms to go carbon negative and provide snowboarders an environmentally friendly option whilst booking their skiing trip.

Chalet1802 owner Rai stated: Last winter was quite a surprise with the warmest wintertime in 55 years in France. Alpine ski fields like Auron, La Grave and Isola 2000 has difficulty. It was mild and the snow didn’t settle so a lot of the early winter skiing season in the French Alps was limited. We selected to go carbon negative to help preserve the snowboarding resort.

Rai said: We’re not trying to prescribe to punters only I think it’s valuable to grant the clients the choice without increasing the cost of the trip. When the client book with us and takes his annual leave in our chalet Chamonix they can more than off-set their carbon output and we absorb the extra prices. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – holiday makers wish for luxury but not at the expense of the environs, so we looked at ways of lessening the results of a client driving over here for a ski holiday.” The firm have also joined with group Climate Care, who deals with climate change by making carbon dioxide reductions for people and businesses.
